Neutrino masses and mixing in A4 models with three Higgs doublets
We study neutrino masses and mixing in the context of flavor models with A4
symmetry, three scalar doublets in the triplet representation, and three lepton
families. We show that there is no representation assignment that yields a
dimension-five mass operator consistent with experiment. We then consider a
type-I seesaw with three heavy right-handed neutrinos, explaining in detail why
it fails, and showing with a numerical example that agreement with the present
neutrino oscillation data can be recovered with the inclusion of
dimension-three heavy neutrino mass terms that break softly the A4 symmetry.Comment: 10 pages, RevTex, 3 figures. v2: much expanded section on softly

Hermite polynomials, linear flows on the torus, and an uncertainty principle for roots
We study a recent result of Bourgain, Clozel and Kahane, a version of which
states that a sufficiently nice function
that coincides with its Fourier transform and vanishes at the origin has a root
in the interval , where the optimal satisfies . A similar result holds in higher dimensions. We improve the
one-dimensional result to , and the lower bound in
higher dimensions. We also prove that extremizers exist, and have infinitely
many double roots. With this purpose in mind, we establish a new structure
statement about Hermite polynomials which relates their pointwise evaluation to
linear flows on the torus, and applies to other families of orthogonal
polynomials as well.Comment: 26 pages, 4 figure
A differential game approach to urban drainage systems control

During heavy rain scenarios, UDSs are not able to handle the amount of extra water that enters the network and flooding occurs. Usually, this might happen because the network is not being used efficiently, i.e., some structures remain underused while many others are overused. This paper proposes a control methology based on differential game theory that aims to efficiently use the existing network elements in order to minimize overflows and properly manage the water resource. The proposed controller is tested on a typical UDS and is compared with a centralized MPC achieving similar results in terms of flooding minimization and network usage, but only using local information on distributed controllers.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

This text presents the main formal aspects, the dimenions and scope of
the recent scientific research project carried away under the frame of the
FONDECYT Introductory program. Said research analyzes the narrative structures
of the Chilean animation audiovisuals produced between 2000 and 2008. The
research aimed at understanding the laws established in the sintactic-semantic
relationship of the formal compositive structure, evident in any studio sample. This
work inaugurates a new research line in Chile and the obtained results project
towards new associative investigations including diverse disciplinary approaches
